Objective of the event
Highlight the importance of Nature-Based Solutions for the successful implementation of the updated NDCs in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are a powerful approach to mitigate and adapt to climate change and sustain rural, coastal, and urban livelihoods. Research shows that they can provide about one-third of the cost-effective mitigation actions needed by 2030 to keep warming below 2°C. NbS, and especially Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) measures, offer protection against the immediate and long-term damaging impacts of climate change, while providing multiple benefits such as water and food security.
Brief description
The session will start with short presentations of high-level policy ideas and a novel analysis of the NbS approach in the updated NDCs of Latin America and the Caribbean, followed by field experiences from the region. A panel discussion among participants will allow for interactive interventions from the audience.
To support the effective implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), a novel analysis will be presented to categorise climate commitments with an NbS approach in the updated NDCs of the LAC region, complemented by specific examples of NbS actions on the ground, through which the EUROCLIMA+ Programme supports climate action in different economic sectors and in various ecosystems.
The panellists will share their perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of NbS in policies, processes, and action, and discuss with the audience concrete experiences and needs to create the enabling conditions and implement NbS in diverse contexts on the ground. The discussion segment will facilitate an exchange on how to create the right environment at the policy level and how to incorporate local actors/indigenous knowledge in the implementation of NbS that supports positive biodiversity outcomes and other multiple benefits.
