Objective of the event
- Highlight the impact of EUROCLIMA+ support in increasing ambition in the region, through the integration of NDC updating/implementation processes and the development of LTCSs.
- Encourage continuity of work in the region by highlighting the results of implemented projects.
- Generate a dialogue among participating institutions on how projects are supporting the implementation of NDC commitments and integrating a long-term perspective into climate action.
Description
The European Union (EU) is a key partner in regional cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) on environmental sustainability and climate change. In this framework, the EU's EUROCLIMA+ Programme aims to reduce the impact of climate change and its effects in the region, promoting climate change mitigation and adaptation, resilience, and investment. It implements strategic actions for the fulfilment of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in its 18 partner countries.
Thanks to the support provided by the EU, through EUROCLIMA+, to Chile in its role as COP25 Presidency, to promote climate action in Chile and LAC, a series of activities were carried out from 2019 and during 2021, open to regional participation. These totalled 30 initiatives, including:
- LAC regional meetings with representatives of Indigenous Peoples, the world of science and sub-national governments.
- Technical Dialogues on Gender and Transparency.
- Studies on the co-benefits of the circular economy in LAC, local plans for a just transition during the retirement of coal-fired power plants, and electromobility.
- The formation of an Advisory Committee for Climate Action in Chile to contribute to the design and implementation of public policies, instruments, and key actions for the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in Chile by 2050.
- The Green Hydrogen Summit, to boost its role in the global energy transition and in achieving carbon neutrality.
- Capacity building of the agricultural sector, in the framework of the LAC Platform for Climate Action in Agriculture (PLACA).
- Promote the informed participation of LAC youth in international climate change negotiations.
We believe that making the valuable results obtained from this collaboration visible is key, highlighting the contribution of each of the projects developed to promote climate action in Chile and the region.
