Objective of the event
The main objective is to publicise the progress of an initiative to conserve the 5 Great Forests of Mesoamerica and address the biggest threat to the region - illegal cattle ranching. Governments will commit to harmonise economic incentives in their countries to boost forest conservation and develop new economic models based on alternatives to cattle ranching, and a call for support from the international community.
Description
Together, Mesoamerica's five largest forests cover nearly 120,000 km2, hold 47% of the region's forest carbon stocks, and buffer climate change vulnerability for more than 5 million people. Unfortunately, forests are being lost at an accelerating rate, both in protected areas and in indigenous territories, and about 90% of deforestation is attributable to causes associated with illegal cattle ranching.
In 2019, the 8 countries of CCAD, AMPB, WCS and Re:wild launched a critical initiative to conserve these 5 Great Forests, and in 2021 the European Union started its support for the initiative through a DeSIRA project. As part of this initiative, governments in the region are initiating a process of harmonising national and regional economic incentives and policies to protect the 5 forests, support indigenous cultures and discourage cattle ranching.
At this event, governments, indigenous peoples, civil society, and the European Union will discuss their participation in the initiative and invite participation from the international community, including EU member states.
