Objective of the event

Briefly describe the joint experiences of the SPIPA, FABLE and NATUREMAP project work teams in modelling and developing trajectories towards carbon neutrality for the AFOLU sector in Argentina.

Description

The presentation describes the work of 3 institutions in Argentina: INTA, Fundación Avina and Fundación Bariloche. The 3 institutions are part of international projects: SPIPA (Paris Agreement Implementation), FABLE (Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land Use and Energy) and NATUREMAP (Biodiversity Protection, Carbon and Water) and they have decided to join their efforts to work together towards the same goal: Contributing to Argentina's carbon neutrality. For more than three years, they have been working on the design of a trajectory for Argentina to achieve carbon neutrality by prioritising co-benefits with other sustainable development goals: adapting to climate change, sustaining food production capacity, conserving biodiversity, protecting water sources, etc. The spatially explicit results demonstrate the biophysical feasibility of achieving these goals, although there are some trade-offs between them. In addition, results of successive approximations to carbon neutrality following the five-year cycle of the NDCs are presented.  Based on stakeholder surveys, coalitions and controversies, the socio-economic and political feasibility of the 2050 trajectory is analysed.
