Brief description

Climate policies that seek to reduce emissions, adapt to climate change and/or protect natural habitats.

Objective of the event:

The proposed parallel event aims to explore the role of territorial planning instruments towards climate change mitigation and how territorial dynamics, especially related to land consumption and use relate with social and economic dynamics that are increasing the vulnerability against climate change in territories. Moreover, the parallel event aims to focus attention on the role of national, regional, and local governments in policies and instruments implementation with a multiscalar approach, as well as to evidence structural issues generated by the impact of urbanization on the environment and quality of life of vulnerable communities.

Considering that more than 80% of the population in Latin America lives in urban areas and human settlements, territorial planning has become a crucial instrument to mitigate climate change and protect natural habitats.

Thus, taking into consideration the experience in the formulation of the Human Settlement System in the Manabí province, a panel of international and national experts will be conducted to introduce a dialogue around strategic issues related to territorial planning and climate change mitigation, among some, the instruments and processes that are required to strengthen the climate change analysis, multiscale policies and instruments that are needed to promote climate change mitigation, land use definition to mitigate uncontrolled urban expansion and agricultural frontier expansion and protect water sources and the territory against desertification, strategies to strengthen urban-rural linkages and responsible production systems towards environmental protection.
